COLUMBIA, S.C., (April 3, 2025) – In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, state house leaders and child advocates will gather in the First Floor Lobby of the S.C. Statehouse on Thursday, April 3, at 10 a.m., to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and declare April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The event, hosted by Children’s Trust of South Carolina in collaboration with state officials, will highlight the urgent need for child abuse prevention efforts and call for increased community engagement.
The press conference will feature remarks from legislators, S.C. Department of Social Services Interim Director Tony Catone, State Child Advocate Amanda Whittle, Children’s Trust CEO Sue Williams and other advocates. Speakers will discuss opportunities the state has to strengthen families and reduce child abuse and neglect.
“As leaders, we must ensure that every child in our state grows up in a safe, loving environment,” said Interim S.C. Department of Social Services Director Catone. “This month is a reminder that preventing child abuse is not just the responsibility of one individual, agency or organization—it requires all of us to be vigilant, supportive and proactive.”
Children’s Trust CEO Sue Williams added, “As South Carolina strives to give every child the opportunity to grow up healthy, happy and safe, we know we must all work together. No single public agency, community organization or individual can ensure success for our children. However, together, we create a better tomorrow for kids and their families.”
The event will also include Governor Henry McMaster’s official proclamation of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in South Carolina, reinforcing the critical importance of prevention work. Attendees will be encouraged to participate in local prevention programs, support child protection organizations, and wear blue on Friday, April 4, as a symbol of solidarity against child abuse.
