SCDSS Announces New Berkeley County Director

Columbia – July 6, 2023 - The South Carolina Department of Social Services would like to announce Valerie Davis as the new Berkeley County DSS Director. Mrs. Davis began her new role on Monday, July 3rd and has been serving as the Interim Director for Berkeley County since January 2023.

Mrs. Davis began her career in Child Welfare in August 1990 with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services as a Kinship Foster Care Case Manager. She also worked as a Probation Officer for the New York City Department of Probation.  Mrs. Davis relocated to South Carolina and began working for the South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS) in Berkeley County in 2000 as a Family Preservation Case Manager. While in Berkeley County, she also worked as a Foster Care Case Manager. Mrs. Davis then became a Performance Coach for the Lowcountry and then returned to Berkeley County as a Family Preservation Supervisor until her promotion in June 2022 to Charleston County Deputy Director.

“I am excited to return to Berkeley County to continue the important work of applying the DSS mission of service to our families by promoting the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and vulnerable adults and helping individuals achieve stability and helping to strengthen families. Our staff, community partners, and providers embody the spirit of unity and cohesiveness to achieve the common goal of helping each other and providing stability during challenging times.”

Mrs. Davis was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. She graduated from the New York School of Printing High School. She earned her B.A. in Journalism from the University of South Carolina and her M.A. in Human Resources and Development from Webster University.
