Extension of Foster Care (EFC) legislation provides a pathway for older youth in the foster care system at age 18, to voluntarily remain in or return to the care and responsibility of DSS until their 21st birthday. TSS will support the agency’s overall approach and response to the needs of young adults. Dedicated staff including Transition Youth Advocates (case managers) and Bridge Navigators will encourage continuous engagement and build transformational relationships with continued support in safety, permanency, and well-being across the journey to adulthood.

Congratulations to Sierra Burns (pictured below with Gov. Henry McMaster and Lt. Gov. Pam Everette) for being selected to participate in the upcoming annual Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative’s Youth Leadership Institute (YLI). Sierra was formerly in foster care and is now a member of the agency’s Youth Engagement Advocates (YEA!). She was chosen to represent South Carolina because she demonstrated leadership and a strong commitment to improving outcomes for young people in and transitioning away from foster care.
