DSS Announces New Jasper County Director

April 13, 2026 - The South Carolina Department of Social Services is pleased to announce Kyra Speller as the new Jasper County Director. She began her new position on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

Ms. Speller began her career in social work as a house manager for youths in residential treatment. In 2007, she joined the Beaufort County DSS office as a Foster Care worker. She was later promoted to Investigations team lead, serving in that role from 2014 to 2022. In 2022, she left DSS to work at Epworth Children’s Home as a Foster Care supervisor. She returned to DSS in 2023, working in the Hampton County office as the Foster Care team lead, and later transferred to the Beaufort County DSS office as team lead for Foster Care and Investigations.

“I am a true believer that public service should operate on a mission for the public good, supporting communities and ensuring everyone has access to essential services that promote well-being and safety, and strengthen society as a whole”, said Ms. Speller. “Everyone deserves a good quality of life”.

Ms. Speller was born in Port Royal, South Carolina, and raised in California. She graduated from California State University with a major in Sociology and a minor in Human Services. She also proudly served in the United States Army for four years before beginning her career in Human Services.
