DSS Announces New Barnwell County Director

May 12, 2026 - The South Carolina Department of Social Services is pleased to announce Susan Jerkins as the new Barnwell County Director. She began her new position on Monday, May 4, 2026.

Ms. Jerkins began her career with DSS in 2005 in Barnwell County, where she served as a Foster Care case manager.  In 2008, she was promoted to Foster Care and Adult Protective Services supervisor, and in 2013, she became a Human Services program coordinator. She has developed extensive knowledge and experience in Child Welfare Services, engaging families, and collaborating with community partners.  

“My goal has always been to protect those who cannot protect themselves and to help individuals and families connect to the resources and develop the skills to heal and succeed,” said Ms. Jerkins. 

Ms. Jerkins earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management from Voorhees College. She holds multiple certifications in Child Welfare-related programs, including certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician and Youth Mental Health First Aid. Prior to her career with DSS, she worked in Workforce Development and Youth Programs through Workforce Investment Act grant programs.
