Notice of Abandonment

January 24, 2019

Cherokee County Department of Social Services officials report that an infant was born on January 23rd, 2019, abandoned at Spartanburg Medical Center and placed under the protection of Safe haven with medical professionals on January 24th, 2019. Upon the information and belief of the agency, the child falls under the jurisdiction for “Daniel’s Law,” the Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act. The infant is a bi-racial female weighing 7 pounds and was 19.5 inches in length at birth. The infant is now in DSS custody. Under the Safe Haven Act, a permanency planning hearing will be held at the Cherokee County Family Court, 125 E. Floyd Baker Blvd, Gaffney, SC 29340 on March 5th, 2019 at 9:00 AM. Any person wishing to assert parental rights regarding the infant must do so at this hearing.

As part of its reform efforts, SCDSS entered into a Final Settlement Agreement regarding the Michelle H., et.al. federal class action lawsuit and has committed to short-term, intermediate, and long-term systemic improvements for children in foster care.
